Where I come from:

Growing up, my community was a mix of old and young people. I grew up in a college town with two sides of the train tracks. My mom and dad were an accountant and an academic before they retired. They had four kids including me. Us siblings have grown up and moved out.

Many of the old people in my community were thinkers. I took after them in that way. I did my best to speak logically and to learn what I could about the world. I took two years of biochemistry in college, later finishing school with a Communication degree. I’ve learned about genres of media and also political theory and U.S. History.

So far in my life I’ve been about languages, music, stage magic, biochemistry, earth science, media, politics, and religion. I want to learn about the world around me so that I know what I’m talking about when I choose to talk about x, y, or z. I’ve had a handful of jobs in retail and have done an internship. My goal in those jobs has been to get good at my job and speak clearly to my coworkers and superiors. These days I’m doing what I can in the areas of my life and learning that giving what I can is better than control. At this point, I do the task in front of me as well as I can and grow my knowledge base a little at a time.

How I see the world:

The U.S. culture has been my whole life. Anti-lgbtq religion meant that I knew my community’s acceptance of me had a condition. Since then, I’ve stayed informed on the U.S. political landscape during these past two Trump terms. Of course, he “didn’t start the fire,” but the “fire” during these years has defined my life. Also, my gender non-conformity has had me myself in flux, too. So my main feeling has been despair. But what positive view of the world do I have despite what I just wrote? I think everyone is constrained by expectations. People- including me- aren’t curious, we’re saving face. Our own, the people we’re around’s, and the face of the groups we’re part of.

But what positive view of the world do I have despite what I just wrote? I do think that the earth and the peoples on it can and do heal when given the chance. I think that peace is possible. I think that we have what we need. I think that, though so much is lost forever, we can move forward into a new age where the fire smolders instead of blazing. I think cool water will soothe our fevered body.
